Reviving Maratha Heritage: Maaydesh Foundation Restores Velas’ Shankar Mahadev Temple

In the heart of Velas, a serene coastal village in Ratnagiri, stands the Shankar Mahadev Temple, a sacred gem from the Peshwa era. Once a proud symbol of Maratha devotion and artistry, time had weathered its structure and faded its intricate murals. Time and the coastal winds left their mark on the Shankar Mahadev Temple. Its spires faded, murals dimmed — yet every stone continues to speak of Maratha faith and artistry that refuses to be forgotten.

Now, Maaydesh Foundation has undertaken a heartfelt mission to restore this historic temple to its former glory. The project focuses on structural repairs, mural conservation, and improved access for devotees, ensuring the preservation of its architectural and spiritual essence. The project includes Structural Stabilization & Repairs, Mural & Sculpture Preservation, and Improved Access for Devotees, Community Involvement.

Beyond restoration, this initiative rekindles local pride, heritage tourism, and community spirit, keeping alive Maharashtra’s cultural legacy for generations to come.
